Building a God-Centered Marriage: The Foundation That Lasts

Building a God-Centered Marriage

Marriage is one of the most sacred institutions established by God. From the very beginning in the Garden of Eden, God designed marriage to be a lifelong covenantal relationship between one man and one woman — a union that reflects His own love and faithfulness to His people. Yet in today's world, marriages are under attack like never before. Divorce rates are climbing, domestic violence is rampant, and many couples are living in silent despair. The question is: How do we build a marriage that not only survives but thrives?

The Problem: When God Is Left Out

Many couples enter marriage with great excitement but little preparation. They focus on the wedding day — the flowers, the venue, the guest list — but neglect the foundation that will sustain them for decades. When challenges arise — financial strain, communication breakdowns, infidelity, or simply the weariness of daily life — couples who have not built on God's principles find themselves crumbling.

The enemy knows that if he can destroy the family, he can destroy society. That is why the family is under such intense attack today. But there is hope. Every challenge plus God equals to change.

Seven Pillars of a Successful Marriage

In our book Seven Pillars of a Successful Marriage, Dr. Jane and I outline the foundational principles that have transformed countless marriages across Kenya. Here are three of those pillars:

1. Christ Must Be the Foundation

A house built on sand will fall when the storms come. The same is true of marriage. Christ must be the cornerstone. This means praying together, studying God's Word together, and making decisions with God's glory in mind. When both husband and wife are submitted to Christ, they are automatically aligned with each other.

"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain." — Psalm 127:1

2. Love and Submission Are Non-Negotiable

Ephesians 5:22-25 commands wives to submit to their husbands and husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This is not about dominance or inferiority — it is about divine order. A body cannot have two heads. When each partner operates in their God-ordained role, harmony follows.

3. Communication Is the Lifeline

Many marriages die not from a single blow, but from a thousand small cuts of silence. Communication, respect, and trust are the adhesive that holds a marriage together. Without open, honest dialogue, suspicion creeps in, quarrels escalate, and intimacy fades.

Practical Steps to Strengthen Your Marriage Today

  • Pray together daily — even if it is just five minutes. Prayer aligns your hearts with God's will.
  • Study the Word together — Find a devotional or Bible study plan you can do as a couple.
  • Practice the Golden Rule — "Do to others as you would have them do to you" (Matthew 7:12). Treat your spouse with the same kindness you desire.
  • Seek accountability — Every couple needs a mentor couple or pastoral support to walk alongside them.
  • Never go to bed angry — Resolve conflicts before the sun goes down (Ephesians 4:26).

Conclusion: It Is Never Too Late

Perhaps you are reading this and your marriage feels broken beyond repair. I want to encourage you: God specializes in restoration. We have seen marriages that were on the brink of divorce completely transformed when the couple surrendered to God and applied His principles. It takes humility, persistence, and faith — but it is possible.

The Role of Parents in Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders

The Role of Parents in Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders

There is a saying that rings true across every culture and generation: "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." Parents are not merely caregivers — they are the primary architects of the next generation. The values, character, and faith we instill in our children today will determine the kind of society we live in tomorrow. Yet, never before have parents faced such a complex and challenging environment.

The Modern Parenting Crisis

Today's parents are navigating uncharted waters. Technology has introduced influences that previous generations never had to contend with. Social media, unrestricted internet access, and peer pressure from global cultures are shaping children in ways that often contradict the values parents are trying to instill. Add to this the pressure for academic excellence, parental absence due to work demands, and the erosion of traditional family structures, and you have a perfect storm.

In our book Parents on a Mission, we identify seven "destiny killers" that threaten our children: technological influence, parental absence, one-sided education, pressure for top grades, ungodliness, strange influences, poor adult behavior, and the neglected boy child. Each of these requires intentional, prayerful counteraction.

Parenting Is a Divine Mandate

The Bible does not treat parenting as optional or secondary. It is a divine mandate. When God created the first family, He gave Adam and Eve a clear assignment: "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28). But procreation was only the beginning. The real work was — and still is — discipleship.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." — Proverbs 22:6

This verse does not promise perfection, but it does promise direction. When we intentionally train our children in God's ways, we give them a compass that will guide them for life.

Eight Essential Lessons for 21st Century Parenting

In Responsible Parenting: A Divine Mandate, we outline eight essential lessons that every parent must master:

  1. Understanding your divine assignment — Parenting is not accidental; it is a calling from God.
  2. Modeling godly character — Children learn more from what they see than what they hear.
  3. Creating a home environment of love and discipline — Balance is key. Too much discipline without love breeds rebellion; too much love without discipline breeds entitlement.
  4. Protecting children from negative influences — Be vigilant about what enters your home through screens, friends, and culture.
  5. Teaching financial responsibility — Even young children can learn the value of work, saving, and stewardship.
  6. Building open communication — Your children should feel safe coming to you with anything.
  7. Praying for and with your children — Prayer is the most powerful parenting tool you have.
  8. Releasing them with blessing — Eventually, your children will leave home. Prepare them to stand firm in their faith.

The Power of Presence

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is your presence. Not just physical presence, but emotional and spiritual presence. In a world where parents are increasingly distracted by careers, devices, and personal pursuits, children are left to raise themselves — or worse, to be raised by the internet.

Make time for family devotions. Eat meals together. Ask about their day — and really listen. Attend their school events. These seemingly small acts build a foundation of security and identity that no amount of money can buy.

Conclusion: You Are on a Mission

Dear parent, you are not just raising children. You are raising future leaders, spouses, parents, and citizens. The world needs godly men and women who will stand for truth, lead with integrity, and love with Christ-like compassion. That transformation begins in your home.

If you feel overwhelmed, you are not alone. We have walked this journey ourselves and have poured our experience into our books Responsible Parenting and Parents on a Mission. We invite you to equip yourself with the tools you need to fulfill your divine mandate.

Youth

Overcoming Youthful Challenges Through Faith and Discipline

Overcoming Youthful Challenges Through Faith

The teenage and young adult years are some of the most formative — and most vulnerable — seasons of life. It is a time of discovery, identity formation, and independence. But it is also a time when many young people fall into traps that derail their destinies. As someone who has worked with youth for many years, both in church and community settings, I have seen both the devastation of poor choices and the triumph of young people who chose faith over compromise.

The Seven Obstacles Facing Today's Youth

In my book Overcoming Youthful Obstacles, I identify seven major challenges that threaten the destiny of young people today:

  • Disobedience to Parents — The Bible warns that dishonoring parents opens the door to destruction (Ephesians 6:1-3).
  • Procrastination — "Through laziness, the rafters sag; because of idle hands, the house leaks" (Ecclesiastes 10:18).
  • Early Love Relationships — Premature romantic entanglements often lead to heartbreak, distraction, and compromised purity.
  • Living Beyond Your Means — The pressure to impress peers drives many young people into debt and dishonesty.
  • Sexual Immorality — A destructive force that steals dignity, health, and future opportunities.
  • Negative Influence — "Bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Faith: The Anchor in Stormy Seas

So how does a young person navigate these challenges? The answer is not more rules or stricter curfews — though boundaries matter. The answer is genuine faith in Jesus Christ. When a young person truly encounters Christ, their desires begin to change. What once seemed attractive loses its appeal. What once seemed impossible becomes achievable through God's strength.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." — Philippians 4:13

Faith is not a magic wand that removes temptation. It is a relationship with God that gives you the power to say no, the wisdom to choose wisely, and the grace to recover when you stumble.

Discipline: The Bridge Between Dreams and Reality

Faith without discipline is like a car without fuel — it has potential but goes nowhere. Discipline means:

  • Setting boundaries for your time, relationships, and media consumption.
  • Developing healthy habits — regular prayer, Bible study, exercise, and productive work.
  • Choosing your friends wisely — Surround yourself with people who pull you up, not drag you down.
  • Delaying gratification — Understanding that short-term pleasure often leads to long-term pain.
  • Seeking mentorship — Find godly adults who can guide you through life's complexities.

A Message to Parents and Mentors

If you are a parent, pastor, or youth leader reading this, please hear me: Our youth need us. They need adults who will listen without judging, guide without controlling, and love without conditions. They need to see faith modeled, not just preached. They need safe spaces to ask hard questions and make mistakes without fear of abandonment.

Conclusion: Your Best Years Are Ahead

To every young person reading this: Your current circumstances do not define your future. The mistakes of yesterday do not have to dictate the possibilities of tomorrow. God has a plan for your life — a plan to prosper you, not to harm you (Jeremiah 29:11). But that plan requires your cooperation. Choose faith. Choose discipline. Choose life.

If you want practical guidance on overcoming the specific obstacles you are facing, I encourage you to read Overcoming Youthful Obstacles. It is written specifically for you, with real stories, biblical truth, and actionable steps to help you win.

Family Restoration

Restoring Hope in Broken Families: A Biblical Approach

Restoring Hope in Broken Families

There is a pain that cuts deeper than most — the pain of a broken family. Whether it manifests as divorce, estrangement, chronic conflict, or the silent drift of two people who once promised forever, family brokenness leaves wounds that affect generations. At Family Rebuild, we have sat with husbands who feel like failures, wives who feel abandoned, children who feel caught in the crossfire, and parents who wonder where they went wrong. If you are in that place today, we want you to know: There is hope. God specializes in rebuilding what is broken.

Understanding the Root Cause

Before we can talk about restoration, we must understand what broke the family in the first place. In our ministry, we have identified several root causes:

  • Self-centeredness — When each spouse prioritizes their own needs, desires, and comfort above the marriage, the foundation cracks.
  • Poor communication — Many families are destroyed not by major crises, but by the accumulation of unspoken grievances and unresolved conflicts.
  • Absence of God — When Christ is not the center, something else will be — and that something else will never be enough.
  • External pressures — Financial stress, in-law interference, work demands, and cultural expectations can strain even strong marriages.
  • Unhealed wounds — Past trauma, childhood experiences, and previous relationships often spill into current family dynamics.

The Biblical Path to Restoration

The good news is that God has given us a blueprint for family restoration. It is not easy, but it is possible. Here are the steps:

1. Acknowledge the Brokenness

You cannot fix what you refuse to face. The first step toward healing is honest acknowledgment. This requires humility — the willingness to admit that things are not okay and that you need help. Pride is the enemy of restoration.

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9

2. Return to God

Restoration always begins with reconciliation — first with God, then with each other. When both spouses humble themselves before God, He begins to soften hearts, reveal blind spots, and heal wounds. We have seen couples on the verge of divorce experience miraculous turnarounds after simply committing to pray together daily for 30 days.

3. Seek Godly Counsel

"Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14). Do not try to navigate deep family issues alone. Seek help from a pastor, a Christian counselor, or a mature mentor couple. There is no shame in asking for help — there is wisdom in it.

3. Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is a decision. It does not mean pretending the hurt never happened. It means choosing to release the debt and trust God with justice. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the prison door — and often, the prisoner is you.

4. Rebuild Trust Intentionally

Trust, once broken, takes time to rebuild. It requires consistency, transparency, and patience. Small acts of faithfulness — showing up on time, keeping promises, being honest about struggles — gradually reconstruct the foundation.

5. Prioritize the Marriage

In the chaos of parenting, careers, and life, the marriage relationship often gets pushed to the back burner. But a strong marriage is the greatest gift you can give your children. Date your spouse. Speak kindly. Show affection. Invest in your relationship as if your family's future depends on it — because it does.

When Restoration Looks Different

We must be honest: not every broken family will be restored in the way we hope. Sometimes, one partner refuses to engage. Sometimes, abuse makes reconciliation unsafe. In those cases, restoration may look like healing for the individual, peace for the children, and a new chapter of purpose. God is not limited by our circumstances. He can bring beauty from ashes, even when the family structure changes.

Conclusion: Every Challenge Plus God Equals Change

This is not just our slogan — it is our testimony. We have seen marriages that were dead for years come back to life. We have seen estranged parents and children reconciled. We have seen individuals who thought they were too broken discover that God's grace is greater than their greatest failure.

If your family is broken today, do not despair. Reach out to us. Order our books. Join our events. Most importantly, reach out to God. He is the ultimate restorer of broken things — and He is waiting to rebuild your family, one brick at a time.
